Steel breathed new life into this venerable New York icon, built in 1903. Nearly every structural component has been replaced or refurbished on this 18-year rehabilitation project, which will have incorporated 29,000 tons of structural steel, millions of hours of labor provided by hundreds of ironworkers and other skilled craftspersons, and more than $1.2 billion in construction costs.
