Survival of the Fittest: Skyscrapers Evolve to Stay Alive

As building projects slow to a standstill across globe, some may wonder if skyscrapers are destined to go the way of the dinosaurs—but a close look at history reveals that, as with nature, some great structures thrive against the odds. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat will host its 40th annual conference October 22-23 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. The CTBUH event will explore financing, design, and construction of skyscrapers during periods of boom and bust. Because some of the greatest projects, such as Rockefeller Center, were built during the latter, the conference looks to identify the signs of recovery and policies that cities and governments can implement to help bring it about.
